VIC O'CONNOR - a Social Realist in changing times

Research project

Vic O'Connor (1918 - 2010) was a prominent Australian artist who first came to attention as a Social Realist in the 1940s. It was a time of change for many artists and O'Connor lay just outside the mainstream of the canon that was then beginning to take shape. He explored the WWII human condition, with its conflicting notions of nihilism and compassion, and opened up an innovative arts practice that embraced urban and coastal atmospheres. Vic O'Connor bequeathed a distinctive aesthetic legacy, which is the subject of this research project.
